SWAT officers had to forcibly remove a Barberton man out of his parent’s house to end a standoff with police that lasted several hours Thursday.

Police said Joseph E. Green Jr., 21, was wanted for violating a protection order based on allegations that he sent threatening text messages and photos of weapons to a Springfield Township resident.

Police went to his residence on 22nd Street NW at about 3:15 p.m. and saw him inside. Police say he ignored officers who knocked on the door. His parents did leave the house.

SWAT officers were then called in and tried to talk Green into surrendering. Eventually, SWAT officers went inside and found Green hiding in the attic at about 10 p.m. They had to use a chemical agent in order to restrain Green, who “violently resisted” being arrested, police said.

Green was taken into custody and driven to Barberton Community Hospital for treatment before being sent to the county jail to await a court appearance in Akron Municipal Court.
