Several members of the Akron Beacon Journal were honored in the annual Associated Press Media Editors competition Sunday.
The staff earned first place in the community service category among newspapers with daily circulation of more than 75,000 for its yearlong series, “America Today.”
“America Today’’ was an effort by the newspaper to explore issues that divide the community and country. It was linked to a larger community civility project that hopes to change the way citizens discuss tough issues.
Beacon Journal sports writer Jason Lloyd finished second in the best sports writer category.
Marla Ridenour also placed third in the best sports columnist category and Mark Turner finished third for best page one layout.
The (Cleveland) Plain Dealer received the General Excellence award in the competition, which judged entries published in 2012.
