Beer truck overturns on Ohio interstate; driver OK

Associated Press

SPRINGFIELD, OHIO: Authorities say a tractor-trailer carrying 40,000 pounds of beer overturned in southwestern Ohio early Thursday morning, closing one lane of interstate traffic for more than eight hours.

State Highway Patrol says the truck was traveling eastbound on I-70 at about 2 a.m. when it struck a guard rail and overturned a few miles east of Springfield. Some beer cases scattered onto the highway.

Lt. Matt Cleaveland said the 39-year-old driver of the truck had minor injuries, but refused medical treatment. Cleaveland said Shmavon Afanasev of North Hollywood, Calif., told officers he fell asleep behind the wheel. He was then given a traffic citation.

Cleaveland said most of the beer had to be unloaded before the truck could be turned back over, and one lane was closed until about 10:30 a.m.
