Boy pulled from icy Ohio pond dies in hospital; man who tried to save him also dead

Associated Press

COLUMBUS: A 5-year-old boy who was pulled from an icy pond in Columbus has died.

Police say Elijah Walker died at Nationwide Children’s Hospital at 5:15 p.m. Sunday.

Authorities say the boy fell through the ice of a pond at an apartment complex on the city’s southeast side Thursday night.

Before rescuers arrived, 30-year-old neighbor James Jenkins went into the water to try to save the child. Police say bystanders then tried to rescue the pair, but they both went underwater.

Several minutes later, crews arrived and pulled them from the pond.

Jenkins was taken to a hospital, but died that night. Walker was pronounced three days later.
