AKRON: Akron police are looking for the driver of a car that crashed into a Kenmore-area church early Tuesday and ran away from the scene, leaving an injured passenger in the vehicle.

The driver, known to the passenger only as “Fat Boy,” crashed a 1998 Honda Accord into The Sanctuary church on 13th Street Northwest in Akron just after 7:30 a.m. According to witnesses, the driver was northbound on 13th Street when the vehicle jumped the curb and became airborne before hitting the front corner of the church.

According to witnesses, the driver fled the scene by running north, said Akron Police Lt. Rick Edwards.

The passenger, a 20-year-old man, hit the windshield of the vehicle on impact, leaving hair and blood embedded in the glass, Edwards said.

The man was transported to Akron General Medical Center with injuries that were described as nonlife-threatening.

Witnesses described the driver as a black male weighing about 250 pounds and wearing his hair in dreadlocks. He was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt.
