Two robbers were rebuffed by an Akron fast-food worker, who drew a hose and fired hot water at them — foiling their heist attempt, police said.
The hapless drenched robbers left the Church’s Chicken at 700 S. Arlington St. with no money or food.
On Sunday, the same restaurant manager was working when the store was robbed at gunpoint by the same two men, police said. That heist netted the robbers about $30.
During the latest robbery around noon Wednesday, the restaurant manager told police he was in the back of the store cleaning some cookware with a kitchen hose when he saw a man’s shadow appear by a rear door. When the manager went to check the door, two men burst inside and one robber flashed a black handgun, police said.
The manager, 37, said he immediately took the kitchen hose and fired hot water at the robbers, forcing them to leave. Seconds later, the man who was armed with a gun reappeared inside. Once again, the manager said he was able to shoo the gunman away with the hot water hose. The robbers then aborted their plans and fled from the parking lot.
Police Lt. Rick Edwards said detectives believe the same men robbed the restaurant workers Sunday night. The men had bandanas covering the lower half of their face when they came inside about 9:30 p.m. Sunday and demanded cash from the register. When they ordered the manager to surrender money from a second register, he told the bandits it was not working. The robbers then left.
Detectives are reviewing surveillance video in an effort to identify the suspects. Police said the robbers are two black males and in their late teens or early 20s. One wore a black varsity jacket with white numbers “20” and “12” on the sleeves. The other had braided hair and wore blue shoes and black shorts.
