Cleveland police to announce new chase policy

Associated Press

CLEVELAND: Cleveland’s police department will announce new guidelines dictating when officers can chase suspects.

The new policy being made public Thursday comes more than a year after a chase involving more than 100 officers and 60 squad cars ended with the deaths of two apparently unarmed people.

A county grand jury is investigating the 13 officers who fired shots during the November 2012 chase that crossed the city.

Critics called the shooting a racially motivated execution.

The police union says officers used force to confront the driver who was trying to ram them.

An investigation by the Ohio attorney general blamed police leadership and communications failures in the chase.
