John “Couch Burner” Denning will take over Howie Chizek’s spot on WNIR (100.1-FM), multiple sources said Friday.
Denning, a University of Akron graduate and regular caller to Chizek’s show, declined comment.
WNIR station manager Bill Klaus, who said Thursday the station hoped to decide Chizek’s replacement next week, was unavailable for comment.
Denning is familiar to Chizek’s listeners through his 25 years of calls to the radio show, and WNIR gave him an on-air tryout in July. A former banker, he is known as Couch Burner because he is credited with pioneering the burning of couches at UA.
Chizek, a WNIR mainstay for close to 40 years, died in June during a trip to Florida, apparently of a heart attack.
