Cuyahoga Falls couple shot in suspected drug deal in Akron, police say

Beacon Journal staff report

A Cuyahoga Falls couple was shot early Thursday in what police suspect was a drug deal that turned violent.

The victims, a woman, 52, and a man, 47, suffered wounds in the shooting that unfolded about 2 a.m. in a parking lot off Berwin Street. They drove themselves to nearby Summa St. Thomas Hospital for treatment.

Police interviewed the couple at the hospital. They told officers they happened to find a cell phone outside a North Main Street bar. The phone owner eventually called and made arrangements to recover the cell phone in exchange for $20, the couple said.

When the victims came to Berwin Street, the owner said he didn’t have $20. The couple then tried to drive away with the phone and the man opened fire.

Police Lt. Rick Edwards said detectives are investigating the couple’s account of the shooting and believe the meeting was related to the sale of crack cocaine.

No charges have been filed.
