Drowning victim positively identified as missing Akron boy

Beacon Journal staff report

The Summit County Medical Examiner’s Office has positively identified the body discovered Sunday morning in Mud Brook creek in Akron as that of a missing Akron boy.

Nicholas L. Shaffer, a 12-year-old from Hemlock Hills Drive in Akron, had fallen or jumped into the normally calm stream that was raging with water following Wednesday’s heavy downpour.

Shaffer’s body was recovered at 11:21 a.m. Sunday, according to a brief statement from the Akron Fire Department.

He had been sitting with family and friends near the creek behind Timber Top apartments in the city’s Merriman Valley.

Three people who witnessed Nicholas going into the water jumped into the creek in unsuccessful efforts to save the boy.

The creek is normally only about 1 foot deep. It empties into the Cuyahoga River west of Akron-Peninsula Road.
