COLUMBUS: A Columbus man admitted he was driving drunk when he hit and killed a bicyclist who rode into the path of his SUV last year.
The 19-year-old bicyclist was at fault in the crash, but the driver of the SUV, 33-year-old Casey P. Hakes, is still going to jail. He was sentenced to 30 days, fined $850 and had his license suspended for seven years.
The Columbus Dispatch reports Hakes pleaded guilty Monday to a misdemeanor count of operating a vehicle while intoxicated.
Police said 19-year-old Elissa Hatfield failed to yield the right-of-way when she drove into the path of Hakes’ SUV at an intersection on July 22, 2012.
