Flights canceled at Akron-Canton

By Cheryl Powell
Beacon Journal business writer

Holiday travelers who planned to fly in or out of Akron-Canton Airport on Wednesday are being forced by Mother Nature to make other arrangements.

By late Wednesday morning, most carriers serving Akron-Canton had canceled nearly all flights in and out of the airport in Green in anticipation of a major snowstorm heading to the region.

Cleveland Hopkins International Airport also had numerous cancellations listed on its website Wednesday afternoon.

Akron-Canton Airport Senior Vice President Kristie VanAuken said she didn’t expect many travelers to be stranded at the airport, though.

Within the past couple of years, she said, airline carriers have become much more proactive about canceling flights early, before snowstorms or other major weather events hit.

“Instead of just winging it and seeing if they can make it in and out and stranding planes and customers, they’re canceling in advance,” she said. “They just don’t want to strand passengers or airplanes.”

VanAuken recommended travelers contact their airline for the most up-to-date information about cancellations, delays and rebooking flights.
