Frigid temperatures break records in Akron area

Akron has shivered its way into the record book the past couple of days, shattering two record lows.

The low of 10 degrees below zero on Monday at the Akron-Canton Airport broke the previous record of 9 below zero set in 1924, according to the National Weather Service.

A second record was broken at the airport Tuesday morning when the temperature dropped to 11 below zero. This broke the previous record low for Jan. 7 set in 1942, when the temperature dropped to 5 below zero.

Factoring in the wind, Tuesday morning’s 11 below reading at 7:51 a.m. had a wind chill of 37 below zero.

The cold is to continue Tuesday with a daytime high of just 2 degrees expected.

Tuesday night’s low reading is expected to drop to zero degrees. A wind chill warning continues through 9 a.m. Wednesday.

Temperatures will gradually rise over the next few days reaching a high in the 20s on Wednesday and reaching the 40s by Sunday.
