GREEN: They’re in better shape than they were four years ago. And there’s Superintendent Mike Nutter to thank for that.
This was the consensus Monday night in Green from the school board as it accepted Nutter’s resignation after he led the district through some tough financial times.
“Financially, there was no money,” Nutter recalled of his first days as superintendent in 2009.
After 20 years in the public sector, the 44-year-old says he is leaving education to free up some family time and run his private consulting firm. His resignation takes effect July 31 when his contract expires.
While board members remain confident they will find a suitable replacement, some were caught off guard by Nutter’s decision, announced to them on Sunday.
“It did surprise me,” said board member Connie Leonard, whose tenure predates Nutter and most other board members.
Leonard spoke with other board members after the meeting about the precarious state of Green schools prior to Nutter’s arrival. They also discussed the average tenure of a superintendent in Ohio — about two or three years.
Still, Leonard appreciated having Nutter if only for four years.
“I think his reasons [for leaving] are good. You have to put your family first.”
Board President Steven Foster, the only member to express prior knowledge of Nutter’s decision to resign, sympathized with the superintendent who he said attended most school events. Foster did not try to dissuade Nutter from leaving. He said he understood the need to make a move.
Foster and the board thanked Nutter’s family for sharing him for four years.
In that time, Nutter led voters to pass two levies for additional revenue after operating on renewal money for a decade.
“There’s a lot of hard work that goes into running this school district,” Foster said. He recalled the time leading up to the levies when teachers and others were identified for pending cuts.
The board did not specify Monday when the search for a superintendent would begin.
