Gunmen rob Akron supermarket; nearby schools locked down

Beacon Journal staff report

Two gunmen robbed the Firestone Park IGA early Monday, prompting three nearby schools to briefly lock down their buildings, Akron police said.

The masked gunmen got away with an undisclosed amount of cash, police said, and no shots were fired. The school reopened later in the morning.

The men went inside the Hammel Street store about 8 a.m. and ordered workers to the floor. One of the men then jumped over a counter and entered an office. Both men then fled with the money.

Police say the men are black, each about 5-feet-5 and weighing 150 to 180 pounds. One wore all black clothing; the other wore a gray hooded sweatshirt.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Akron police at 330-375-2490. Information may also be provided anonymously by calling Summit County Crimestoppers at 330-434-COPS(2677). Tipsters may qualify for a cash reward.
