A heater inside one of the restrooms in the large concession/storage building at the Our Lady of the Elms sports complex in Bath Township is believed to have sparked a fire over the weekend.
School officials say fire and insurance investigators have concluded their probe into the early Sunday morning fire that destroyed the building off Ira Road.
“They have ruled out foul play — the snow was a helpful clue because there were no footprints or tire tracks,” according to school officials.
A motorist traveling on Interstate 77 around 12:30 a.m. on Sunday was the first to spot flames tearing through the building at the athletic complex.
The Elms dedicated the $1.6-million, 16-acre athletic complex in 2001 after it was annexed from the Crown Point Ecology Center. It has two soccer fields, two softball fields, six tennis courts and an eight-lane, 400-meter track.
School officials say plans are now underway to rebuild on the site.
