The visiting Explorers outscored the Mustangs 28-7 in the second half Friday to rally for the Northeast Ohio Conference win to remain undefeated.
The Explorers (8-0, 3-0) trailed 10-7 at halftime but scored 14 points in the third quarter and 14 in the fourth for the win.
Senior Ben Hart had a 1-yard touchdown run, and junior Mitchell Guadagni threw a 27-yard touchdown pass to senior Jared Ruffing to give the Explorers a 21-10 third-quarter lead.
The Mustangs scored to make the score 21-17 before Hart and Ruffing each rushed for touchdowns in the last four minutes of the game to pull away for the win.
Guadagni threw for 287 yards and two touchdowns, and the Explorers outgained the Mustangs 453-211.
Northwest 25, Kenmore 21
T.D. Culp threw a touchdown pass and rushed for a touchdown in the fourth quarter to rally the host Indians (3-5) to a nonleague win over the Cardinals (2-6).
The Cardinals led 21-11 after three quarters, but Culp had a 1-yard touchdown run and threw a 57-yard touchdown pass to give the Indians the win. Triston Mullane rushed for a touchdown for the Indians, and Perez Smith rushed for 108 yards and a touchdown for the Cardinals.
St. Vincent-St. Mary 41, Barberton 0
Vince Lockett rushed for two touchdowns, Breyon Samuel and Parris Campbell each rushed for a touchdown and the host Fighting Irish (8-0) scored 27 points in the second quarter in a rout over the Magics (2-6). Aaron Bushner threw a 30-yard touchdown pass to Markus Hurd, and the Irish held the Magics to 127 total yards.
Archbishop Hoban 50, NDCL 13
Junior T.J. Moore rushed for 105 yards and two touchdowns, and the visiting Knights (5-3, 3-0) defeated the Lions (4-4, 0-3) in a North Coast League game. Freshman Todd Sibley rushed for 83 yards and a touchdown, and senior Jake Tersigni rushed for 74 yards and a touchdown for the Knights.
Walsh Jesuit 27, Cleveland Benedictine 7
Bryan DiCillo rushed for 155 yards and two touchdowns to lead the host Warriors (5-3, 3-0 North Coast). Anthony Rozum had a 43-yard touchdown run for the Warriors.
Tallmadge 49, Cloverleaf 28
Senior Bobby Clark rushed for 349 yards and four touchdowns to help the host Blue Devils (5-3, 3-2 Suburban) defeat the Colts (2-6, 0-5). Junior Garrison Flora threw two touchdown passes to lead the Colts.
Nordonia 49, Revere 7
The visiting Knights (8-0, 5-0 Suburban) scored 28 unanswered points in the third quarter to pull away for the win over the Minutemen (1-7, 0-5). Senior Sterling Brabson rushed for 88 yards and two touchdowns, and junior David Murray threw for 186 yards and two touchdowns for the Knights. Junior Chase Costanzo rushed for a touchdown for the Minutemen.
Kent Roosevelt 33, Streetsboro 6
Dustin Monaco threw for 140 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for another to lead the visiting Rough Riders (7-1, 4-0 PTC-Metro). Monaco threw touchdown passes to Eriqk Smiley and Corey Spicer, and Marcus Caddiell had a 10-yard touchdown run for the Rough Riders.
CVCA 21, Fairless 14
Senior Jeff Hojnacki had an interception on the 7-yard line with 1:15 remaining in the game to give the visiting Royals (4-4, 3-2 Principals Athletic) the win over the Falcons (6-2, 3-2). Senior Matt Pettica had a 53-yard interception return for a touchdown, and sophomore Matt Decipeda had a 10-yard touchdown run for the Royals.
Buchtel 12, North 0
Sophomore Marquis Sams rushed for a touchdown, and junior Deric Rucker caught a touchdown pass from senior Chris Davis to lead the Griffins (4-4, 4-1 City Series).
Division I championship
Chase Johnson shot a 7-over-par 78, and Walsh Jesuit finished the first day of the Division I state championship in fourth place with a team score of 330.
Luke Liberatore shot an 82, Chris Utrup an 83 and Michael Furey an 87 for the Warriors on the Scarlet Course at Ohio State University.
Matt McAdoo carded an 82 to help put Twinsburg in 10th place after the first round.
Stow’s Ian Holt shot an 82, North Canton Hoover’s Jacob Appleby and Todd Lensman shot 90s and GlenOak’s Chris Clapper carded a 93 as individuals not on qualifying teams.
Cassie Pantelas shot a 6-over-par 76 to put Jackson in third place, and Kasey Nielsen shot a 7-over-par 77 to lead Kent Roosevelt to eighth place after Friday’s first round of the girls Division I state championship on the Gray Course at Ohio State University.
Wadsworth’s Alice Ho, playing as an individual, shot a 78 and is in a three-way tie for 13th place. Medina’s Mindy Herrick carded an 85 and sits in a four-way tie for 39th as an individual.
Chloe McKinzie shot an 81 to put Highland in ninth place after the first round.
Division I championship
Tessa Hill of Jackson defeated Megan Miller of Sylvania Northview to advance to today’s semifinal round of the Division I tennis championship in Columbus.
Hill will play Cincinnati Ursuline’s Mehvish Safdar in a semifinal match. Safdar defeated Walsh Jesuit’s Molly Sandberg in a quarterfinal match Friday. Cloverleaf’s Emily Dunbar also lost a quarterfinal.
North Canton Hoover’s doubles teams of Natalie and Nicolette Bourlas and Abby Warburton and Alivia Arnold each lost in quarterfinal matches. Emily Hissong and Gina Costanzo of Walsh Jesuit lost in the opening round.
