In Dan Wheeler’s past four appearances, he gave up nine runs and 10 hits in five innings, including six runs in one inning Sunday against the Red Sox.
After the game, the Tribe designated him for assignment. It’s not clear whether they would ask him to go to Columbus if he clears waivers or whether he would agree to go to Triple-A.
One mitigating circumstance for Wheeler is that he has not been used regularly, though it is difficult to defend his 8.76 earned-run average in 12 appearances (12‚ innings).
Who will fill Wheeler’s roster spot?
There are several relievers at Columbus who are pitching relatively well.
• Jeremy Accardo has a 2.76 ERA in 13 appearances (16· innings) with seven walks and 16 strikeouts.
• Chris Ray has a 2.20 ERA in 15 appearances (16· innings) with seven walks and 13 strikeouts.
• Hector Ambriz has a 3.26 ERA in 12 appearances (19· innings) with 13 walks and 20 strikeouts.
• Frank Herrmann has a 4.11 ERA in 12 appearances (15· innings) with four walks and 17 strikeouts.
DAMON THANKFUL – Red Sox fans cheered Johnny Damon, and the club presented a highlight video of his achievements with his former team early in Sunday’s game.
“This is the first time they’ve recognized me for the things I did here,” he said. “I really appreciated what they did and how the fans reacted.
“There used to be hard feelings on both sides. I wanted them to re-sign me [in 2005] but they didn’t. My only option was New York, and I’m glad I had that experience. Now, I appreciate both sides [of the rivalry with the Yankees].”
IN HIS BLOOD – When Zach McAllister started Saturday night’s game at Fenway Park, it brought back memories of his childhood.
“The last time I was here was in 1999 [for the All-Star Game], when my dad was a scout for the Red Sox,” he said. “But pitching here was way more exciting.”
McAllister’s father, Steve, is now the Midwest scouting supervisor for the Diamondbacks.
