A Jackson Township man shot his wife in the leg, then fatally shot himself an hour later outside the hospital where the woman was being treated early Wednesday.

Joye Owens, 58, was being treated for the gunshot wound at Affinity Medical Center in Massillon. No information was released on her condition.

Jackson police say she was shot about 2 a.m. inside her Erie Avenue home. Chief Dave Zink said her estranged husband, Danny Owens, shot her in the knee with a .22-caliber firearm during an argument inside the residence.

Owens then took his wife to the hospital for treatment. By 3 a.m., Massillon police found his body inside his car. He apparently died of a single self-inflicted gunshot wound, Zink said.

Jackson and Massillon police and the Stark County Coroner’s Office are investigating.

Anyone with information is asked to call Jackson police at 330-834-3960.
