Jury selection begins in Summit County capital murder trial

Beacon Journal staff report

Jury selection began Monday morning in the Summit County capital murder trial of a 20-year-old Akron man indicted for a break-in and shooting last year in which a cousin was killed and another cousin was shot in the face.

Bryan D. Giles of Blache Street was charged with aggravated murder, attempted murder and numerous death penalty specifications in the Feb. 5 fatal shooting of his cousin, Jarrell Cunningham, 27, and the shooting of another cousin, Terrell Patterson, 20, during an aggravated burglary and robbery at the victims’ home in the 600 block of Madison Avenue in Akron.

Patterson was shot in the face and critically injured, but survived. Police said the shooting stemmed from a previous dispute between Giles and Cunningham.

The case is assigned to Common Pleas Judge Alison E. McCarty.

Jury selection is expected to last several days.
