Jury selection began Tuesday morning in the Summit County capital murder trial of a Barberton man charged with the fatal shooting of a 16-year-old girl and her unborn child.

David A. Stoddard, 25, of 14th Street NW, was indicted for aggravated murder, death penalty specifications and other offenses in connection with a January 2013 home invasion at an East Archwood Avenue residence in Akron.

A pregnant 16-year-old, Anna Karam of Akron, was shot to death, and a second victim, Jessica Halman, 19, of Norton, was shot in the head but survived.

Witnesses told police Stoddard was looking for his girlfriend when he barged inside the home and opened fire. Wadsworth police found Stoddard inside a motel room a few hours after the shootings.

Common Pleas Judge Thomas A. Teodosio is handling the case. Jury selection is expected to take at least a week, prosecutors said.
