Kasich says drilling tax will resurface in budget

By John Heilprin
Associated Press

DAVOS, Switzerland: Ohio Gov. John Kasich (KAY’-sik) says his proposal to increase taxes on oil and gas drilling will resurface in the upcoming state budget.

Speaking to The Associated Press Friday during the World Economic Forum, Kasich said “you can expect that to come back.”

Kasich wouldn’t say whether his Feb. 4 budget announcement will include an expansion of Medicaid, however. The Republican governor did say he isn’t considering potential political fallout to his GOP colleagues in the state Legislature who opposed the Affordable Care Act in making the decision.

He said “political considerations are at a minimum.”

Kasich said Ohio’s economic comeback was generating interest — and potential new business opportunities — at the event. U.S.-based Dow Chemical Co. and Philips Healthcare are among companies he spoke with at the event.
