Below is a letter sent to Kent State faculty and staff early Wednesday from board Chair Jane Murphy Timken, a few hours in advance of the announcement of Beverly J. Warren as the university’s 12th president:
I wanted you to be the first to learn of a historic day ahead as the Kent State University Board of Trustees meet today to elect the university’s 12th president.
Many of you have anticipated the conclusion of the search and the opportunity to meet the person who will lead the university forward, and I am pleased to report that day will be today.
The board will discuss our recommendation at today’s public meeting at 10 a.m. in the Rockwell Hall Atrium, followed by a vote on the nomination of the next university president. We invite you to attend the meeting that will be followed by a press conference where the president-elect will address the community and the public about the opportunity to serve our great university. At the conclusion of the event, video of the press conference will be posted to www.kent.edu/president/presidentialsearch/announcement so that you can personally see and hear from our next president.
I’m confident that the board is making the right choice to continue the bold vision Dr. Lester A. Lefton has put into action since his work began more than seven years ago.
Rest assured there will be many opportunities for you to get to know the president-elect on a personal level and to welcome our next president to the Kent State family. Later this afternoon, there will be another opportunity for faculty, staff, students and alumni to meet and greet the president-elect at the Schwebel Room on the third floor of the Kent Student Center from 3 to 5 p.m.
We expect the president-elect to visit periodically between now and the July 1 start date so that faculty, students, staff, alumni, donors and our community partners can each have a chance to speak with our next president.
Again, I hope you will be able to join us at this morning’s special board meeting to hear the big news first as we take this important step for the future of Kent State University.
Jane Murphy Timken
Chair, Kent State University Board of Trustees
