Man shoots self after standoff in Streetsboro

Beacon Journal staff report

A 49-year-old man was being treated at an Akron hospital Monday for a self-inflicted gunshot wound following a standoff with Streetsboro police.

According to a report from the department, Streetsboro police responded to a call on William Henry Drive at 9:29 p.m. Sunday that a man was threatening to commit suicide. When officers arrived, he could be seen through a bedroom window holding a handgun to his chest.

The Metro SWAT team was called out and was able to communicate with the man, but he refused to come out of the home. At 1:40 a.m., SWAT personnel heard a gunshot from inside the home, and moments later the man walked out the front door with a gunshot wound to his chest.

The man, whose identity has not been released, was transported to Summa Akron City Hospital, where his condition is unknown.

No criminal charges have been filed.
