Man uses hammer to attack woman outside Akron grocery store

An Akron woman was injured after a man armed with a claw hammer attacked her outside a grocery store, police said.

The 24-year-old woman suffered minor injuries during the attack Wednesday night outside the Aldi’s at 772 S. Main St., police said. She was treated at the scene by paramedics.

The man who attacked her had not been identified.

The victim told police she was loading groceries into her car about 8 p.m. when the man suddenly began hitting her in the back with the hammer. The woman ran through the parking lot and the man pursued her until another man scared him off, police said.

The man, whom the woman did not recognize, is white, in his late 20s and has an average build. He has blond hair, an unshaven face and wore Carhartt-style overalls with a dark-colored skull cap. He also carried a backpack.
