The former wife of Akron Mayor Don Plusquellic was found dead Friday morning from apparent heart-related issues.
Mary Plusquellic, 63, was found lying on a couch inside her Fifth Street Lane apartment in Barberton by her brother, who visited about 10:30 a.m.
An autopsy was conducted by the Summit County Medical Examiner’s Office. The cause of death is pending additional testing.
A spokesman said Mary Plusquellic had a history of cardiac health problems, including hypertension, and the cause of death likely will be listed as natural.
The Plusquellics were divorced in 2007 after nearly 35 years of marriage. They had two children and six grandchildren. Grounds for the divorce were never specified in court papers.
The mayor and the former Mary Goffee grew up in the same Kenmore neighborhood in Akron and married in 1972. Two years later, Don Plusquellic was elected to the Akron City Council. He has held public office ever since.
Mary Plusquellic stayed out of the political spotlight that her husband cast. She was a mother, a grandmother and worked as a drug and alcohol counselor for local nonprofit entities.
