Military vehicles get free ride on Ohio Turnpike

Associated Press

BEREA, OHIO: Military vehicles on official business will no longer have to stop to pay tolls on the Ohio Turnpike.

The Ohio Turnpike Commission voted Monday to allow free passage on the 241-mile toll road to military vehicles rushing to a weather emergency, transporting soldiers or on some other government business.

Executive Director Rick Hodges said other toll roads already have adopted the policy. He said several recent incidents — including military vehicles rushing east for superstorm Sandy relief — highlighted the need for the policy change.

The Plain Dealer says the free rides are expected to cost the turnpike about $18,000 a year.
