Millersburg man dies in car accident; Rittman woman seriously injured

Beacon Journal staff report

A Millersburg man died and a Wayne County woman was seriously injured in a crash early Sunday when she drove left of center on state Route 83 in Holmes County.

Delmer Lainez, 25, died at the scene, after Elaine K. Nelson, 68, driving a 2003 Chevrolet Trailblazer struck his 2012 Toyota Camry about 12:15 a.m., according to the Ashland Post of the State Highway Patrol.

An ambulance transported Nelson, of Milton Township, to Pomerene Hospital in Millersburg. A medical helicopter later flew her to Akron General Medical Center.

A passenger in Lainez’s car, 2-year-old Kimberly De Alvarado, suffered critical injuries, the patrol said, and was flown by a medical helicopter from Pomerene Hospital to Akron Children’s Hospital.

Nelson was driving south on state Route 83, north of Millersburg, when she struck a Honda Civic, which was traveling north. She then continued in the northbound lane and hit Lainez’s car.

None of the three people in the Honda Civic, including a 1-year-old in a car seat, was injured.

The patrol said it was not immediately clear why Nelson went left of center.

The Holmes County Fire District and EMS, along with Smith Ambulance and Holmes County Coroner Dr. Robert Anthony assisted the patrol at the scene.

The accident was the fifth fatal car crash this year in Holmes County, the patrol said.
