MOGADORE: A village police officer arrested and jailed for pulling a gun on a fellow officer at a New Year’s Day party has no history of disciplinary problems with the department he has served for the past 14 years, his chief said Thursday.
Mark E. Halliwill, 43, is charged with one count of felonious assault, a second-degree felony, and having weapons while intoxicated.
During an off-duty party Tuesday at Halliwill’s residence, he pointed a semiautomatic handgun at another Mogadore police officer while drinking, police said. No shots were fired, and no one was injured.
Halliwill, who was arraigned Wednesday in Portage County Municipal Court, has an exemplary record, Chief David Fowler said.
“His disciplinary record is clear,” Fowler said. “The only previous disciplinary action is misuse of a cell phone.”
The chief said Halliwill is on paid administrative leave until a Portage County Sheriff’s Office investigation of the incident is complete.
Halliwill was released on his own recognizance under the conditions that he not consume or possess alcohol or illicit substances.
A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Jan. 11 in Judge Mark Fankhauser’s courtroom, according to court records.
