The Akron area is getting a new radio station that will focus on local politics, music, art, healthy living and working-class issues.

The Federal Communication Commission recently approved a construction permit for Radio Free Akron, which will begin broadcasting on 96.9 FM in about 18 months, according to a news release issued today.

The 50-watt station will broadcast to Akron, Cuyahoga Falls and Tallmadge.

One of the station's shows will focus on union perspectives on labor and employment rights. The show and topics will be developed and presented by area union members.

George Johnson, president of the Akron chapter of the American Federation of County, State and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) is a member of the station's committee and supported its FCC application.
