Norton opens ‘cooling center’ during heat wave; meeting cancelled

Beacon Journal staff report

NORTON: The city has opened a cooling center for residents to escape the heat and relax in an air-conditioned facility.

The center will be open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the Norton Community Center, 4060 Columbia Woods Drive, until the extreme heat relents.

Only water and seating will be provided. Any users of the center should bring their own food, medications and other necessities they might need during the stay. Coolers/containers may be brought into the center, but alcoholic beverages are prohibited and no storage will be available.

Users of the center should check in at the Administration Center reception desk.

In a related matter, the town hall meeting Councilman Bill Mowery had scheduled for 6 p.m. Thursday has been cancelled. The room he planned to use is the room being used as the cooling center.
