DAYTON, OHIO: The U.S. Air Force says a new $20.8 million supercomputer will nearly double the computing power at Ohio’s largest military base.

The latest supercomputer is expected to arrive in May at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base near Dayton.

The Dayton Daily News reports that the Cray XC30 will have the capability to calculate one quadrillion calculations per second. Officials say that should put it among the top 20 fastest computers in the world.

Officials said the water-cooled computer is expected to reduce a backlog of data for test simulations.

The expanded capability is part of $50 million being spent by the Department of Defense to modernize high-performance computing systems.
