Ohio crime lab chief dies while diving in Florida Keys

Associated Press

KEY LARGO, FLA.: A man who died after diving off of Key Largo, Fla., has been identified as the head of Ohio’s state crime lab.

Monroe County Sheriff’s officials say 56-year-old Ronald Dye of Grove City, Ohio, and a dive buddy surfaced about 25 minutes after entering the water Wednesday.

A Tropical Adventures captain told deputies a crew member with a rescue buoy helped them to the boat. A crew member started CPR, but Dye was later declared dead.

The dive buddy told deputies they surfaced because Dye was low on air. At that point, he said Dye indicated something was wrong but didn’t specify what it was.

The Ohio Attorney General’s office says Dye led the Bureau of Criminal Investigation lab for over a year and was on its new dive team.
