Ohio day-care center tries to block homeless shelter

Associated Press

COLUMBUS: A central Ohio child-care center is going to court to try to stop a temporary winter shelter for the homeless from opening next door.

Creative Child Care Inc. filed a lawsuit and sought a restraining order in court in Franklin County on Wednesday. The Columbus day care wants to block the county from approving the opening of the 190-bed homeless shelter.

The Columbus Dispatch reports that while day-care officials are sympathetic, they think the shelter would endanger children and hurt their business.

Michelle Heritage, executive director of the Community Shelter Board, said the legal battle complicates an already dire situation. She said shelters are crowded already, and officials don’t have a backup plan as the temperature drops.
