WESTERVILLE, OHIO: Authorities say a driver fatally shot by a central Ohio police officer was an ex-convict who was holding a gun as the officer approached his car during a traffic stop.
Westerville police said 59-year-old John W. Montgomery was shot to death by an officer early Monday north of Columbus. The Columbus Dispatch reports that Montgomery served 18 years in prison for voluntary manslaughter and drug crimes. He was released in 2000.
All the details haven’t been released, but police say Montgomery was shot after the officer approached his car on the passenger side during a traffic stop for an “equipment violation.”
A news release said Montgomery “did not comply with the officer’s orders and was holding a handgun.”
The officer’s name hasn’t been released.
