ELMWOOD PLACE, OHIO: A Southwest Ohio village mayor is rejecting calls that she step down amid controversy over new traffic cameras that led to thousands of speeding tickets.
The Cincinnati Enquirer reports that applause met Elmwood Place Mayor Stephanie Morgan’s comments Tuesday night that she wouldn’t resign. People have been upset over about 13,000 citations sent out in about two months since the traffic cameras began operating. The citations carry fines of $105 each.
Councilman Jerald Robertson has called on the mayor to resign and says he will gather signatures on a petition for her ouster. He and others say the tickets are hurting the reputation and businesses of the village of about 2,200 people near Cincinnati.
Police say the cameras have resulted in less speeding through the village, making it safer.
