Ohio schools look at computer program after thefts

Associated Press

CLEVELAND HEIGHTS, OHIO: An Ohio district is considering whether to resume a program that allowed students to take home school-issued tablet computers but was curbed after some students were targeted by thieves.

The Plain Dealer in Cleveland reports the Cleveland Heights-University Heights district gave its middle school students 1,300 iPads when the school year started. It stopped allowing them to take the computers home after just a few weeks because thieves stole computers from students headed to and from school.

Police say a dozen students had the iPads stolen in less than three weeks.

Parents at a meeting on the issue Thursday had mixed opinions. One suggested abandoning the take-home computer plan for the year, while others said doing that deprives students of an opportunity to learn using the latest technology.
