COLUMBUS: The Ohio Senate’s leader is ruling out changing voter identification requirements this year but says discussions continue on other election law updates in the battleground state.
Republican Senate President Tom Niehaus says if the Senate acts on an elections bill in the lame-duck session, it would be a narrow measure. He said Tuesday that nothing was planned and no bill was pending in a committee.
Election law proposals sparked partisan rancor in the state Legislature this session. And Ohio’s rules on early voting and provisional ballots have been the subject of recent legal disputes.
Niehaus has appointed a small working group of lawmakers to review whether the law needs to be revamped. He said that group is still meeting, and there hasn’t been a final decision made on changes.
