Ohio student dies after playing basketball

Associated Press

FAIRFIELD, OHIO: A school spokeswoman says a high school freshman in Southwest Ohio has died, one day after he collapsed during a recreational basketball game.

The Cincinnati Enquirer reports that Maxwell King was a student at Fairfield Freshman High School north of Cincinnati.

Schools spokeswoman Gina Gentry-Fletcher, on her Facebook page Tuesday, said King was a popular and well-liked student.

Gentry-Fletcher said King fell ill while playing basketball Monday at a YMCA. She didn’t know whether he had a previous history of health problems.

Gentry-Fletcher said school principal Katie Pospisil learned King had died when he was absent Tuesday and she called his mother to check on his recovery.

A moment of silence was observed for the student at the school’s varsity basketball game Tuesday night.
