SOUTH ZANESVILLE, OHIO: The 71-year-old mayor of a central Ohio village has died after falling off the running board of a firetruck and hitting his head.
The village of South Zanesville, about 60 miles east of Columbus, said Terry Richard Guss Sr. fell Friday inside the fire station after returning from a house fire. He’d been a member of the village’s volunteer fire department for 20 years.
Chris Kerby, the fiscal officer of the village, said Guss was in a coma after the fall Friday and was taken off life support on Sunday.
The Columbus Dispatch reports that Guss had served as the administrator of the village of nearly 2,000 for about 10 years before he was appointed mayor in April 2007, after his predecessor resigned.
