Ohio voters pass more than half of school levies

Associated Press

COLUMBUS: Ohio voters have passed more than half the school funding levies on ballots statewide.

The Ohio School Boards Association said that 105 funding levies were approved by voters Tuesday, while 87 were rejected.

Damon Asbury, the legislative director for the association, said the 55-percent approval rate for the 192 levies was consistent with statewide results in other presidential elections.

Asbury said 37 percent of the 122 requests for new tax dollars passed, which was also about what officials expected. Nearly two-thirds of all school issues on the ballot were for new money, the highest percentage in a general election in a decade.

He said new requests are always more difficult to get passed and usually appear on the ballot two or three times before they gain voters’ support.
