An unlicensed motorist was charged with failing to control a speeding truck that went off the road and damaged five vehicles parked outside Akron Children’s Hospital.
Alonzo Morton, 44, of Akron, was charged early Sunday with failure to control and driving with a suspended license.
According to witnesses and Akron police, Morton was speeding north on Locust Street near West Buchtel Avenue about 5:30 a.m., when his pickup truck struck a parked 2001 Honda Accord owned by a Bolivar man. No one was inside the car.
The collision set off a chain reaction involving four other vehicles parked on Locust Street, police said.
Meanwhile, Morton’s 2005 Dodge Durango went onto the sidewalk, striking a tree and several metal signs before re-entering the road and hitting another parked vehicle.
Police said Morton was not intoxicated. He was treated for his injuries at Akron General Medical Center.
No other injuries were reported.
Three vehicles, including Morton’s truck, were heavily damaged. The three other vehicles sustained minor damage, police said.
The owner of the truck Morton was driving is insured, police said.
