LORAIN, OHIO: A low-flying World War II-era plane that led some concerned northeast Ohio residents to call police turned out to be on an environmental mapping mission.
The Chronicle-Telegram reports that police dispatchers in Lorain say they received calls Monday.
A pilot for Texas-based Airborne Imaging Inc. says that company owns the former U.S. Navy DC-3 and uses it for data collection. Pilot Dave Wheeler says Airborne is mapping coastal areas for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
He says the mapping every five years helps determine the environmental condition of waterways by documenting changes such as erosion and the effect of silt on harbor channels.
He says the company has been working in Great Lakes states since June.
The plane flying out of Port Clinton was built in 1942.
