Associated Press

COLUMBUS: Columbus police say officers who witnessed a group rob a store shot and critically injured an armed suspect and arrested four more people.

Police say the confrontation happened Wednesday as officers were conducting surveillance on a group suspected in about a dozen robberies in the past three weeks.

The department says police followed the two adults and three teenagers and saw them rob employees of a store at gunpoint. Police say they confronted the suspects as they returned to their vehicle, and a male suspect who got out with a handgun was shot multiple times.

The injured suspect was taken to a hospital in critical condition. The remaining four suspects were arrested without incident.

Police say the five are charged with aggravated robbery. Their names were withheld pending further investigation.
