EDINBURG TWP.: Six people were injured when a sport-utility vehicle crashed into a tractor-trailer at an Interstate-76 rest area Wednesday in Portage County.
The State Highway Patrol said the crash occurred as the SUV was exiting the westbound lanes of the highway when the driver failed to slow before entering the rest stop at 5:25 p.m.
The SUV struck the rear of a parked tractor-trailer, trapping a 29-year-old pregnant woman in the front seat of the SUV.
Ayesha Johnson or Fort Wayne, Ind., was extricated from the vehicle by fire personnel and taken by helicopter to Robinson Memorial Hospital, where she and the unborn child were being treated for nonlife-threatening injuries, the Ravenna post of the patrol said.
The SUV driver, Nuhu Abdulai, 32, also of Fort Wayne, and three children, ages 5, 6 and 11, were transported to Robinson Memorial Hospital for minor injuries.
A 3-year-old strapped into a child safety seat was not injured.
The truck driver, Larry Gribbins, 52, of Hendersonville, Tenn., who was seated in the vehicle at the time of the collission, suffered minor injuries but did not require medical treatment.
The crash remains under investigation.
