Ravenna man falls asleep while burglarizing home

By Beacon Journal staff report

RAVENNA TWP.: A Portage County man was arrested Monday after authorities say he fell asleep while burglarizing a home.

The Portage County Sheriff’s department was called to the 6300 block of Jean Drive in Ravenna Township around 4 p.m. Monday after a homeowner found the burglar in his bed.

Authorities say Dustin Sellers Applegate, 31, of Ravenna, was found asleep wearing clothes belonging to the homeowner. He also had the homeowner’s shotgun in the bed.

When the homeowner walked into the room, authorities say, Applegate, who lives on Sheldon Street, awoke and reached for the shotgun.

A struggle ensued, but the homeowner was able to wrestle the gun away and hold Applegate at bay until deputies arrived.

Investigators charge that Applegate forced his way into the home and gathered items and put them in a backpack before falling asleep.

Applegate faces a charge of aggravated burglary.

He is in the Portage County Jail.
