Sheriff: Escaped Ohio inmate dies after car crash

WASHINGTON COURT HOUSE, OHIO: Authorities say an escaped Ohio prisoner has died after he crashed a stolen vehicle while being chased by law enforcement officers.

Pickaway County Sheriff Robert Radcliff says David L. Payne of Lynchburg was thrown from the car after it went off the side of the road and rolled several times Monday afternoon.

The 27-year-old Payne is accused of stealing the 2005 Kia Amanti that he crashed on Route 104, near the county line between Pickaway and Ross counties.

A statement from the Fayette County Sherriff’s Office said the inmate was being transported to a county hospital when he escaped. No law enforcement officers were injured.

Radcliff told The Columbus Dispatch that the speeds in the chase topped 100 mph before a deputy used “stop sticks” to flatten the vehicle’s tires.
