Several residents of a Stark County Metropolitan Housing Authority high-rise apartment building were still in Red Cross and Salvation Army emergency housing Sunday after a Saturday night fire.
The fire at Lincoln Apartments on Lincoln Way East broke out at 6:48 p.m.
Flames were confined mostly to one apartment on the fourth floor, assistant Massillon fire Chief Larry Layne said, but other parts of the floor suffered smoke and heat damage.
The fire started when a candle caught a blanket on fire, Layne said. The entire building of 100 residents was evacuated.
By Sunday, most residents were allowed to return to the six-story building. Those still displaced were fourth-floor residents.
Some residents and some Massillon police officers were treated for smoke inhalation but released from hospitals, Layne said.
A damage estimate was not available Sunday.
