Summit County prosecutors announced a 13-count indictment against an Akron man accused in the slayings of a prominent couple at their home in New Franklin this month.
Shawn Eric Ford Jr., 18, of East South Street, was charged with five counts of aggravated murder, numerous death-penalty specifications and other crimes in the April 2 bludgeoning deaths of Jeffrey Schobert, 56, and his wife, Margaret “Peg” Schobert, 59.
If Ford is convicted of any of the most serious charges, he could face the death penalty.
Summit County Prosecutor Sherri Bevan Walsh issued a statement in conjunction with Ford’s indictment, saying the crimes “were particularly brutal.”
A sledgehammer, according to investigative records filed with the Summit County Medical Examiner’s Office, was found on the bed to the right of Jeff Schobert’s body in the master bedroom of the couple’s home on Rex Lake Drive in the Portage Lakes area.
His wife’s body was found on the floor of the bedroom.
“Shawn Ford is accused of killing two people, both of whom were, by all accounts, kind and generous people who treated him with the utmost respect. My office will see that justice is served for these horrific crimes,” Walsh said.
Police investigators, in announcing Ford’s arrest April 4, said he was the boyfriend of the couple’s 18-year-old daughter, Chelsea Schobert.
Her father was a prominent area attorney. Her mother was a well-known charitable volunteer.
Ford also is charged in the indictment with two counts of aggravated robbery, aggravated burglary, grand theft, petty theft and felonious assault.
The felonious assault charge was filed in connection with Ford’s alleged March 23 attack on Chelsea Schobert inside a home on Andrus Street in Akron. She suffered a fractured skull and stab wounds and, according to the latest police accounts, remains hospitalized at Akron Children’s Hospital.
Zachary J. Keys, 20, of Andrus Street, and Joshua E. Greathouse, 26, of East South Street, are named in the indictment on felony charges of obstructing justice in connection with the attack on Chelsea Schobert.
