Suspected Akron gas station robber flees in taxi; arrested quickly

Beacon Journal staff report

Akron police are investigating the early Monday morning robbery of a Speedway gas station on South Main Street.

Workers say a man walked into the business about 2 a.m. and asked for two packs of Newport cigarettes and all of the money from the register.

The robber left the store with cash and got into a taxi.

Authorities say police officers stopped the taxi near the intersection of East Wilbeth Road and Thornapple Street and arrested Robert D. White, 44, of Springfield Township. He is charged with aggravated robbery.

Police say White also is a suspect in the robbery of a Burger King in Akron.

Workers say that about 7:30 p.m. Sunday a man walked into the fast-food restaurant on East Waterloo Road.

The suspect walked up to the counter “with something yellow in his hand and demanded all of the money from the register,” police said.

The man told workers that he would “spray this place down” if he was not given cash, according to a police report, which also indicated he had a large hunting knife in his back pocket.

The workers refused to give the man any money, and he ran from the restaurant.

Police say charges are pending for the Burger King robbery.

White was being held in Summit County Jail.
